Sheffield College Catch the Bus Week

Young people living in South Yorkshire can get cheaper travel on public transport with a MegaTravel or a 16-18 Student Pass.

The free passes allow school and college students under 18 years old to travel for a concessionary fare of 70p per journey on bus and tram, and half fare on Northern Rail train services in the county.

Plus, entitle young people to the range of value-for-money child and student tickets from bus and tram operators, including prepaid weekly tickets offering unlimited travel across South Yorkshire from 72p per day.

Pass applications can be made online at travelsouthyorkshire.com/ticketspasses using a MyTSY account. MegaTravel Pass holders must be under 16. Parents applying for their child’s pass now can make the most of the discounted travel it offers over the summer.

New students applying for a 16-18 Pass for the first time will be given a unique code upon enrolment at school, college or training to complete their application. 16-18 Student Pass holders must be under 18 and registered in full time education.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), responsible for funding concessionary fares and administering passes, has worked with local education providers to simplify the 16-18 Pass application process for returning students.

For the first time, some second year 16-18 Student Pass holders across South Yorkshire will have their pass automatically processed and ready for collection on their return to education in the new academic year.

SYPTE Interim Head of Organisational Development, Brenda Worsdale, said: “MegaTravel and 16-18 Student Passes prove to bus drivers, tram conductors and ticket collectors that young people are entitled to the cheaper concessionary travel that SYPTE provides, and child and student tickets from transport operators. We know how important it is for students to have their pass as soon as possible, and we have worked hard to improve our processes.

“We have teamed up with local schools and colleges so some 16-18 Student Pass holders going into their second year will now have their pass automatically renewed and ready to collect at the start of term.

“This year we’re also piloting an automatic pass process with Sheffield College that removes the need for eligible students to apply for a 16-18 Pass altogether. We hope to extend this across all South Yorkshire schools and colleges in future years.”

Sheffield College, Longley Park Sixth Form College, Doncaster College, Dearne Valley College, Thomas Rotherham, McAuley Catholic High School, Notre Dame High School, Tapton School, Ridgewood School, John Leggott College and Penistone Grammar School will automatically renew 16-18 Student Passes for returning students in 2016/17.

Single child concessionary fares in South Yorkshire will increase by 10p on 18 September 2016, from 70p to 80p. Barnsley’s MiCard child concession will remain at 60p.
