People and organisations across South Yorkshire are being asked to comment on the revised Rail Strategy for the county.
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has recently undertaken a review and a refresh of the existing South Yorkshire Rail Strategy, which aims to take a deliverable yet challenging approach to the future development of the region’s rail network. The draft strategy will now be available for consultation and comment.
Since the adoption of the current strategy in 2004 there have been a number of changes to the structure of the rail industry in the UK and also to trends in rail use. Growth in rail patronage has been increasing, and as a result the focus of the strategy has shifted from a position of maintaining the network, into one where growth must be accommodated.
The refresh has provided the opportunity to update the network information and maps within the document, to update the trends within the industry, to set out key phased investment priorities and to update completed and planned station and infrastructure improvements,
The strategy considers issues including capacity and efficiency improvements, new stations and lines, and customer service facilities, leading to a set of clearly identified priorities.
David Young, Head of Transport Integration at SYPTE said: “The revised strategy looks ahead to the next phase of the development of the South Yorkshire rail network and sets out the key investment priorities that we believe would make a real difference. We want to hear what the people of the region and local organisations think about it.”
The document will be sent out to key rail stakeholders and is available for all to view online at /consultation/
The South Yorkshire Rail Strategy refresh has been produced by the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), on behalf of South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority (SYPTA).
