Phase 3 of Doncaster’s Quality Bus Corridor

On Monday 19 November 2007 work will begin on Phase 3 of Doncaster’s Quality Bus Corridor (QBC), a project part funded by the Department for Transport. This work marks a key stage in the construction of the most sophisticated quality bus corridor in the county.

Phase 3 works will see highway works taking place along the section of York Road between Jossey Lane and St Mary’s Gyratory.

This work will also be closely tied in with the ongoing construction of the northern Park and Ride site opposite Green Lane. Once complete the new park and ride site will provide secure and convenient parking for a capacity of around 400 cars.

The Phase 3 works will involve the introduction of several key improvements:

  • A 24 hour inbound bus lane constructed alongside the existing highway
  • Upgraded bus stops along the route
  • Refurbished traffic signals, excluding Jossey Lane, with bus priority where appropriate
  • Improved pedestrian crossings at Alwyn Avenue and Morrisons supermarket
  • A relocated bus stop further up York Road inbound to be nearer Morrisons supermarket
  • New state of the art buses with the latest low-emission engines
  • Improved street lighting along the route.

David Young, Head of Transport Integration at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) said: “Whilst these important works are taking place, temporary traffic management will be put in place to minimise disruption to the general public and local businesses. However during this construction period the partners in the project would like to thank Doncaster residents, motorists and bus passengers for their continued patience and co-operation during this phase of the construction period.

“When the QBC is completed it will help by creating a better regulated traffic flow for all road users, safer pedestrian crossing points and improve the quality, reliability and performance of bus services.”

At each specific stage of work along York Road more detailed information will be made widely available in the press, via a dedicated website and telephone information line (0845 300 8830).

The A638 QBC project is a partnership between South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Doncaster Council and the local bus operators in Doncaster.

It extends both north and south of Doncaster town centre; along York Road, from Green Lane to the North Bridge, and in the south along Bawtry Road from Racecourse Roundabout to Parrots Corner.

In December 2006 the Department for Transport agreed to provide significant funding of £15.3 million for the infrastructure works and local bus operators will be making major investment in their bus fleets. Construction work has now started on three of the five phases and work is due to start on the fourth phase later this year.

The scheme is scheduled to be completed in 2008.
