Park and Ride Facility opens in Sheffield

The Transport Executive are pleased to announce the new £½m Park and Ride facility at Malin Bridge will open to the public on Monday 6 November.

The Malin Bridge site is one of six Park and Ride facilities across Sheffield designed to ease congestion and provide an accessible alternative to driving into the city.  The scheme aims to encourage drivers to park on the outskirts and complete their journey into Sheffield centre by public transport.

The completed Park and Ride site at Malin Bridge provides parking spaces for 104 cars, including 7 for disabled users and 5 cycle stands. CCTV cameras, good lighting and a barrier controlled entrance have been installed to achieve Park Safe standard, offering a safe environment for customers to leave their vehicles.

A riverside walk running around the edge of the site also features, complete with seating areas for local residents and users of the facility to enjoy.

Roy Wicks, Director General of the Transport Executive said: “There has been an increase in the number of customers using Sheffield Supertam in the Malin Bridge area, many of whom travel to the tram stop by car from places such as Stannington and Loxley.

“We hope by introducing over 100 park and ride spaces at the tram stop it will encourage more people to leave their car on the outskirts of the city centre rather than driving into work everyday.  Park and ride sites are a convenient, good value and easy way to travel to work and means you don’t have to worry about congestion.”

MP Angela Smith, Member of Parliament for Sheffield, Hillsborough, said: “If we are to encourage people to leave their cars at home and help cut congestion and more importantly cut CO2 emissions we need to provide easy alternatives to driving to the city centre. This latest additional Park and Ride in the Hillsborough area will do just that.”

Malin Bridge Park and Ride site will be officially opened by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority Chair Councillor Mick Jameson and Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, CouncillorTerry Fox on Friday 3 November.
