New Free Car Park For Rail Users Opens

On Monday 17 September a new car park will open at Barnsley Rail Station - the next phase of the £24m interchange project.

Rail users in the Barnsley area will benefit from 82 new free car parking spaces including six disabled and two parent and child spaces.  These spaces replace the 55 previously available at the old transport interchange.

The car park, which is situated next to the rail station, has been built by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and is a joint partnership between Network Rail, Northern Rail and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

Access to the new car parking facility is from the recently-opened Interchange Way which connects Eldon Street North with Kendray Street/Pontefract Road and has relieved the traffic jams which used to occur at Jumble Lane level crossing.

Roy Wicks, Director General of SYPTE, said: "I am delighted that the rail car park has been opened as it is the next part in the interchange jigsaw. The improved car parking facility at the interchange is a safe environment for people to leave their car and will hopefully encourage more people in the Barnsley area to use their local rail services."

Barnsley's new £24 million transport interchange opened in May after three years of development.

It has 22 bus stands, two coach stands, state-of-the-art customer information systems, retail units and a direct bridge link to Barnsley railway station.

It has been built by SYPTE with financial support from the Department for Transport, Objective 1, Yorkshire Forward and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

Since the interchange opened it has been extremely popular and so far it has been used by thousands of people.

SYPTE is a member of the Travel South Yorkshire partnership.

The aim of the partnership is to bring public transport together, encourage more people to use it, make it easier to understand and deliver new, innovative public transport products and services.

Travel South Yorkshire is the new identity of the public transport network in South Yorkshire.
