Improvements to Doncaster’s rail station were highly commended last night at the HSBC Rail Awards.
Doncaster station underwent a £4.5 million refurbishment led by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). The work included new lifts to all platforms, the re-opening of the station concourse to its original open layout and refurbished subway and stairs.
The project also provided an enclosed link to the adjacent Frenchgate bus interchange and shopping centre. In addition, new lighting and security systems make the station a safer and more welcoming environment for rail passengers.
SYPTE provided the project management and some funding, while other funding was provided by GNER, Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, the Railway Heritage Trust and Teesland Developments.
David Young, Head of Transport Integration at SYPTE, said: "I am delighted that our work to improve Doncaster rail station has been recognised by this award. Our aim is to encourage more people to use public transport and one of the ways we can do this is by improving the transport infrastructure with schemes like this.
"We hope the improved facilities and improved access to the rail station will make it easier and more attractive for people to use."
This is the sixth major transport award SYPTE has won over the past 12 months, including being named Passenger Transport Authority of the Year in the National Transport Awards.
