Developing the Quality Bus Corridor

During the week beginning 28 April 2008, construction of the A638 Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) on York Rd will move into the final Section of works between Baldwin Avenue (opposite the York Road Retail Park) and St. Mary’s Gyratory.

Works have progressed well so far along York Road, and the move into the final section will see the majority of work taking place to widen the carriageway to accommodate the final stretch of the bus lane.  Works are expected to be complete by the end of August.

The start of the inbound lane restrictions will move from the Barnsley Road and Watch House Lane area to a point approximately mid way between Halifax Crescent and Baldwin Avenue.  It will be necessary to introduce evening outbound lane restrictions from time to time.  In order to minimise disruption, these will start on 28 April to coincide with other work taking place on St. George’s Bridge.

Access will be maintained at all times for people visiting any of the adjacent retail outlets.  However it will be necessary to introduce short-term evening lane restrictions and closures for works at the junction with the access to Morrisons store that is closest to the town centre.  A fully signed diversionary route will be provided for motorists.

The move onto the final section of works along York Road will also see buses being able to use the new section of bus lane between Halifax Crescent and Baldwin Avenue.

David Young, Head of Transport Integration at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, said: “On behalf of the A638 QBC partnership, I would like to apologise for any inconvenience these vital roadworks will cause. When the Quality Bus Corridor is completed there will be a noticeable improvement in the reliability of bus services along the route and also a Park and Ride service into the town centre.”

About the A638 Quality Bus Corridor:

The A638 QBC is a partnership between SYPTE, Doncaster Council and Doncaster’s    bus operators. The scheme includes improvements to the highway, sections of 24-hour inbound bus lane, new bus facilities, new signalised pedestrian crossing facilities, street lighting, and Park and Ride sites north and south of the town centre.

The A638 QBC project is a partnership between South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Doncaster Council and the local bus operators in Doncaster.

It extends both north and south of Doncaster town centre; along York Road, from Green Lane to the North Bridge, and in the south along Bawtry Road from Racecourse Roundabout to Parrots Corner.

In December 2006 the Department for Transport agreed to provide significant funding of £15.3 million for the infrastructure works and local bus operators will be making    major investment in their bus fleets. Construction work is well underway on four of the    five phases and work is due to start on the final phase later this year.

The scheme is scheduled to be completed in 2009.
