Carbon Quids Fever Hits South Yorkshire

Don’t Miss Out - One More Week to Collect Quids

European Mobility Week has started and thousands of people have shown interest in collecting Carbon Quids – an environmental campaign which rewards people for making ‘better travel choices’.

Since the scheme was unveiled on Monday 3 September the website has had more than 27,000 hits as people across the county find out how they can earn the UK's first green currency.

Anyone using public transport, walking, cycling or car sharing in South Yorkshire can earn Carbon Quids, which can be exchanged for a wide range of fantastic prizes on Saturday 22 September.

To prove people have made ‘better travel choices’  all they have to do is save their bus, tram or train tickets or fill in a travel diary saying where they have walked, cycled or car shared to and from.

On Saturday 22 September people’s efforts will be rewarded as they cash in their Quids for a wide range of prizes at one of four Carbon Cash In points.  The Cash In points are open between 1000 and 1600 and they are being held at:

• Fargate, Sheffield
• Rotherham Transport Interchange
• Barnsley Transport Interchange
• Frenchgate, Doncaster.

All the prizes have been donated by local businesses and include:

• an annual gym membership for Sheffield International Venues and 1,500 day tickets
• free travel tickets donated by all transport operators across South Yorkshire including First, Stagecoach and Midland Mainline
• trees
• tickets for Sheffield Hallam Arena
• vouchers and a food hamper from Greggs and Oakbrook Deli
• cycling goodies from Hudson Cycles
• £50 shoe vouchers from Faith shoe shop
• pedometers
• a bike from JE James
• leisure tickets for Edlington Leisure Centre
• free driving hours with WhizzGo - the car sharing scheme
• an annual pass for Metrodome
• t-shirts from Betty's Boarding House.

The campaign has been launched by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), with support from councils, transport operators and local businesses.

Roy Wicks, Director General of SYPTE said: “So far we have been delighted with the response to Carbon Quids and we would like to thank everyone for their support.  Don’t worry though if you have not started collecting them yet as there is still one more week to go.

“Just save your bus tickets or fill in a travel diary and you will receive a wide range of prizes.  It’s that easy, just come along to one of the Carbon Cash In points on 22 September and you will be rewarded for making better travel choices.”

There are three types of bags worth 100, 130 and 150 Quids.  The more people change their behaviour the more they can earn giving better quality prizes.

On the day it will be first come, first served as there are limited numbers of bags available. There will also be a free prize draw, which can be entered online or at the Cash In points.

Travel diaries are available from hundreds of community venues across the county, including interchanges and Travel South Yorkshire information centres.  They are also downloadable or by calling Traveline on 01709 51 51 51.
