Barnsley Rail Station Wins National Safety Award for a Second Time

Barnsley Interchange's rail station will be presented with a national award on Tuesday 22 May for the second time in recognition of its top class safety, security, station design and management.

The rail station is having the award renewed due to its continued standards of excellence, after winning it for the first time in February 2005. It is being presented under the Secure Stations Scheme, which is managed by the Department for Transport (DfT) in partnership with the British Transport Police (BTP) and crime prevention charity Crime Concern.

The award is for four separate elements which include the reality of crime, passenger perceptions, the physical environment of the station and station management.

David Young, Head of Transport Integration at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), is delighted that the rail station has been chosen to win the award for a second time.

“I am delighted that Barnsley Rail Station has been deservedly recognised again to win this fantastic award for a second time. The Secure Station Scheme reinforces the fact that safety and security for our staff and passengers are our top priorities. We have listened to the views of passengers over the years and are very committed to providing a safe environment to access public transport.”

To be re-accredited for the award, Barnsley Rail Station has shown good systems for managing and monitoring safety procedures and dealing with crime and disorder issues.

Barnsley has also been praised for good station design and maintenance and safety features such as 24 hour manned state-of-the-art digital CCTV systems, fully qualified Customer Service Officers and good levels of lighting and passenger information.

This weekend Barnsley's new interchange will open to the public.  It will have 22 bus stands, two coach stands, customer information systems, retail units and a direct bridge link to Barnsley railway station.
