Bus service saved from cancellation by Barnsley Bus Partnership

21 September 2016

A BUS service in Barnsley has been saved from cancellation, after another operator agreed to take over the route commercially, as part of the Barnsley Bus Partnership.

Waterson’s Coaches will begin running service 193, which operates between Barnsley and Wakefield, on Monday 31 October, after the current service’s operator, Arriva, notified it was withdrawing from the route.

Arriva had planned to cease the service at the end of October, after low passenger numbers made the service commercially unviable. However, following feedback from local residents and councillors, a new agreement with Waterson’s Coaches was secured as part of the Barnsley Bus Partnership.

Waterson’s Coaches will provide approximately one bus per hour during Monday to Saturday daytimes, retaining the links between Barnsley, Royston, Ryhill, New Crofton and Wakefield.

A Barnsley Bus Partnership spokesperson, said: “We’re delighted to announce that Waterson’s Coaches has agreed to take over the operation of service 193 from the end of October. The Barnsley Bus Partnership is committed to providing services, where possible, that best meet the needs of the local community.”

Ronald Waterson, Proprietor of Waterson’s Coaches, said: “We’re pleased to be able to support Barnsley Bus Partnership by providing a service between Barnsley and Wakefield for local residents. We recognise that the link between Barnsley and Wakefield is essential to the local community and we look forward to beginning to operate the service.”

More information on the upcoming change to service 193 will be available at travelsouthyorkshire.com/servicechanges before service commencement
