£500,000 awarded for cleaner buses in Sheffield City Region

Sheffield City Region has been successful in securing £500,000 from Government to make buses in Sheffield city centre cleaner.
£500,000, which was the maximum amount of funding on offer to Sheffield City Region, will be used to tackle harmful emissions of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from two of the busiest commercial services within the Sheffield bus fleet.
The funding will enable 25 buses operating on the 51 and 52 routes to be fitted with technology that targets harmful emissions of nitrogen dioxide, bringing them in line with the latest engine standards. It is estimated that the emissions lowering technology will reduce harmful nitrogen dioxide emissions by approximately 48 tonnes per year in Sheffield.
Martin McKervey, Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) lead private sector member for Transport, said:
“This funding will mean better air quality and less pollution from 25 buses on our busiest routes. Buses already have an important role to play in taking cars off the road and reducing congestion, and cleaner buses will help to make Sheffield an even more attractive place to live and work, as well as helping to reduce the number of health related problems brought about by air pollution.
“In Sheffield alone it is estimated that up to 500 early deaths a year result from poor air quality, so it is important that we continue to attract funding like this to further reduce emissions from buses.”
The funding has been won from the Department for Transport’s Clean Bus Technology Fund, following a successful joint bid by Sheffield City Region and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. Local leaders are working to improve air quality in line with targets set out by the European Union.
