Jobseekers in South Yorkshire are benefitting from an innovative online resource designed to help people travel to new work, education and training opportunities.
The ‘Get Moving’ e-learning resource provides bespoke public transport advice and support tools for people working with NEETS (people Not in Education, Employment or Training), to aid independent travel and develop confidence and self-esteem.
Developed by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund Inmotion! project, ‘Get Moving’ aims to remove perceived barriers to using public transport, create new employment opportunities and enable businesses to reach a wider pool of potential employees.
‘Get Moving’ is easily accessible and works similarly to a website. The e-learning scheme provides training providers, employment and education centres with a personalised web address (URL) to access the site to meet clients’ individual needs. The resource offers tools to aid independent travel training, including;
• Journey planner – clients are shown how to plan a journey from their front door
• Interactive Map – helps with planning a journey, shows where the nearest bus/tram/train stops are in a specific location and live departure/timetable information from bus/tram stops. Also shows the distance people can travel within 45 minutes to widen the access to job and training opportunities
• My TSY – personal account function which allows people to store favourite journeys as well as how to apply for personalised smartcard travel passes and tickets.
Deputy Head of Service for Student Services and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities at Sheffield College, Mick Merchant, said: “‘Get Moving’ demonstrates how online tools can help students to easily plan their journeys from home to get to an interview or new work placement. It is an ideal tool to deliver group presentations, or provide one on one support.”
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive Head of Customer Services, Nigel Cairns, said: “The Inmotion! project has a track record of widening sustainable travel options to improve access to work, education and training. ‘Get Moving’ is a simple but effective tool that tackles the barriers that prevent people accessing career and learning opportunities head on, by providing the information and support they need to get around in an easy-to-digest resource. This is a fantastic self-serve tool that aims to aid independence and open new doors.”
Inmotion! is made up of representatives from SYPTE and the local authorities of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. It was established in 2013 following a successful bid for £24.6 million from the Department for Transport’s ‘Local Sustainable Transport Fund’ to help boost South Yorkshire’s economy.
