Sheffield CityWide ticket goes smart

13 October 2014

• Sheffield’s CityWide ticket launched on Smartcard

• Smartcard kiosks installed at more transport interchanges

• Further tickets for smartcards planned this Winter

SMART ticketing for public transport continues to advance in South Yorkshire, with the launch of the CityWide ticket on smartcard - offering unlimited travel on bus and tram in Sheffield.

Passengers are now able to buy the CityWide ticket on an electronic pass instead of using the scratch cards and paper tickets currently available, making travelling around the region even easier.

Additional smartcard kiosks have also been installed at Hillsborough and Arundel Gate travel interchanges, increasing the number of interchange sites serviced by kiosks in South Yorkshire to 7. The kiosks vend smartcards, allowing people to get a new smartcard and add smart-enabled tickets to their card, as an alternative to buying it over the counter at a Travel Information Centre.

The addition of CityWide to the smart ticket portfolio follows the launch of TravelMaster 7 and 28 Day tickets on smartcard in August 2014. More multi-operator tickets will be made available on smartcards over the next year.

Smart ticketing in South Yorkshire is delivered by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) together with its’ project partners YorCard and TravelMaster, and bus and tram companies.

As part of the phased project, work is underway to allow tickets to be loaded onto smartcards in various ways, such as online and pay-as-you–go type products.

Sheffield City Region Combined Authority Transport Committee Vice Chair, Cllr Leigh Bramall, said: “Smart ticketing in South Yorkshire is helping to revolutionise the way in which passengers travel. We are excited to continue to progress South Yorkshire’s smartcard project with the launch of CityWide, making it even easier for people to get around Sheffield by bus and tram.

“We are committed to our promise to expand the range of tickets that are smart enabled.”

TravelMaster Chairman, Duncan Roberts, said: “This is a further step in TravelMaster’s exciting plans for ticketing which will be unveiled over the next few months; I hope passengers will enjoy the simplicity which it brings to their daily journeys and others will be prepared to join the public transport revolution.”

The £1.34m scheme to introduce smartcards in South Yorkshire is funded by the Better Bus Area Fund (BBAF) - a grant awarded to SYPTE in March 2012 by the Department for Transport - together with funding from TravelMaster, and bus and tram operators that have equipped their vehicles with smartcard readers.
