Rotherham Central station wins national award

28 February 2014

ROTHERHAM Central Station has won a prestigious, national award for Station Excellence in the Rail Business Awards - celebrating innovation and best practice across the rail sector.

The accolade follows the extensive £10.4 million redevelopment of Rotherham Central Station, which re-opened to the public in February 2012.

Led by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) together with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC), Northern Rail, Network Rail and the Department for Transport, and part financed by the European Regional Development Fund Programme 2007 to 2013, the improvements have seen the number of passengers using the station grow to over half a million a year.

The station works have provided customers with better facilities, improved passenger comfort and accessibility via lifts, and a new waiting room, lighting, CCTV, information screens, ticket office and retail kiosk. As well as creating a really positive welcome to Rotherham.

Then-Secretary of State for Transport, Justine Greening, applauded the ‘real benefits for passengers and the wider community’ that the new station provides, saying: “It will boost competitiveness, stimulate the local economy and showcase Rotherham as a vibrant town with many exciting opportunities for new businesses.”

In a joint statement, SYPTE, RMBC and Northern Rail, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious award in recognition of the significant improvements made to Rotherham Central Station.

“The new station provides an attractive gateway to Rotherham, encouraging a boost to economic growth and providing a significantly enhanced experience for customers travelling to and from the town. This achievement is testament to the dedication of staff and partners involved in the project.”

The 16th annual Rail Business Awards, in association with Rail Business Intelligence and Railway Gazette International, took place on Thursday 27 February 2014.
