Park & Ride sites awarded top marks for safety

17 January 2014

Thirteen South Yorkshire car parks have retained a prestigious police award for safety and security following a recent assessment by an independent inspector, in a move which will reassure potential Park and Ride customers.

Adwick, Bentley, Doncaster North, Doncaster South, Elsecar, Meadowhall, Halfway, Malin Bridge, Middlewood, Nunnery, Swinton and White Rose Way Park and Rides have been recognised as examples of excellent parking design and have won the right to display the ‘Park Mark’ sign of quality for the next 12 months.

In addition the car park at Rotherham Interchange has also successfully retained the award. The awards complement those held for Wombwell and White Rose Way which are due to be reassessed later this year. Elsecar won the award only weeks after opening late last year.

The British Parking Association, on behalf of South Yorkshire Police, assessed the car parks and judged that all had measures in place to deter potential criminal activity and create a safer environment for both the public and their vehicles. Amongst the criteria the police check are that the car parks are properly managed, maintained and have appropriate levels of surveillance, lighting, signage and cleanliness – all of which contribute to reducing the opportunity for crime.

The ‘Park Mark’ is part of the UK Police flagship initiative ‘Secured by Design’ that promotes crime reduction through effective design and security standards in public buildings, roadways, footpaths and car parks as well as private houses. The award is made after inspection by an accredited assessor and is subject to re-assessment every year.

David Young, SYPTE Deputy Interim Director General, said: “We are very pleased that our Park and Rides have been judged to be of the highest standard. We work very hard to ensure that our facilities offer a safe environment for people to leave their vehicles so that they can have confidence and peace of mind.”
