Tram-train highly commended at rail awards

10 July 2013

TRANSPORT partners leading South Yorkshire’s national tram-train pilot scheme have been Highly Commended at the prestigious Railway Industry Innovation Awards.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), together with Network Rail, Northern Rail, Stagecoach Supertram and the Department for Transport, were commended for the Cross-Industry Partnership Award for their innovative efforts to maximise skills and efficiencies to successfully deliver the tram-train scheme.

The scheme will link heavy and light rail infrastructure, systems and operations together to provide a new tram-train service between Sheffield city centre and Rotherham Parkgate that operates on the existing tramway and the national rail network.

The circa £60 million pilot is the first of its kind in the UK and will operate from 2016. It will provide a boost to the local economy thanks to improved connections across the area and is expected to create 35 new jobs locally.

Ben Still, SYPTE Interim Director General, said: “I am delighted that SYPTE’s hard work, together with our project partners, has been recognised at the Railway Industry Innovation Awards. Tram-Train is a further welcome investment by Government in the transport infrastructure of South Yorkshire.

“This award is testament to the huge efforts made by partners to ensure tram-train will bring long lasting benefits to our region by improving customer journeys and helping to grow our economy. We are excited to be involved in this ground breaking scheme."

The Railway Industry Innovation Awards are organised by Modern Railways and are the longest-established railway industry awards. The 2013 Awards were presented by Interim Franchise Director at the Department for Transport, Pete Wilkinson.
