Supertram Rail Replacement Pinch Point Bid

In December 2012 the Department for Transport (DfT) announced it would make up to £170m of funding available to remove bottlenecks on the local highway network where growth is being affected.

Following discussions with DfT, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) prepared a Supertram Rail Replacement Pinch Point Bid, which sought approval for funding towards the costs of rail replacement works on parts of the Supertram network. This bid was approved in January 2014.

SYPTE and Stagecoach Supertram are delivering the works, which include renewal of parts of the existing network and modification to allow the operation of Tram Train, as part of a wider essential rail replacement project. The first phase of rail replacement work commenced in Summer 2013.

Sheffield’s tram system is used by around 15 million people each year. Work on the network over the past two years has already seen the replacement of around 10km of track. Over 22km of track is being replaced in total at an estimated overall capital cost of £32million.
